What to Expect

You will be asked to fill out an intake health questionnaire before your first treatment. You may print that form out here, fill it out, and bring it with you; or you may fill it out when you arrive at the office for your first visit. Please bring with you a list of all medications and supplements you are currently taking.

I will ask you a series of questions about many aspects of your health including sleep, digestion, energy, emotions, and the nature of any pain.  Some of the questions may seem unrelated to your complaint, but they help to create a more complete picture of your life and health and to better understand and treat the underlying causes of your complaint.

I will feel your pulses and look at your tongue. These are standard diagnostic techniques in Asian medicine.

If possible, wear loose fitting clothes.  You will be asked to remove your shoes and socks.  I will generally need to be able to place needles on wrists as well as ankles and legs to just above the knees.  Needles will likely be placed in any area of pain.  Women should wear a bra which can be unfastened in the back, rather than a pull on sports bra. Gowns are available and you will be draped with a sheet.

New, sterile, disposable needles are used for each session. While you may feel the needles as they pass through your skin, there should be no pain or discomfort once the needles are properly in place.  You may feel qi as a dull, heavy sensation at the needle site.  A few people actually feel the movement of qi in there bodies.  Needles will generally be left in place for 20 to 30 minutes and then removed.

A typical course of treatment is 6 to 10 treatments, occurring once a week. You may feel different immediately after your first session, or it may take several sessions for longer term problems to change.  At first the improvement may last a few hours or a few days. As treatments proceed, the improvement is expected to last longer.  The symptoms may resolve completely or may improve and reach a plateau.
